The future of my family is changing and I can’t believe it’s taken this long for God to get our attention about such a huge need. Last week I started a series of posts about my family and friends Thanksgiving experience that I called “A Thankful Giving”. This series of blog posts are my way of journaling about my experience and the insights that God has shown me. My hope is that God nudges you to begin changing your family culture…
Culture is a world that is used a lot right now. In most cases it can be loosely defined as the behaviors and beliefs that drive a particular group of people. For the longest time my family (parents, brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins) have had a tradition of gathering together every Thanksgiving. Since my grandmother passed away a few years ago, we have been gathering at my mom and dads house for the Thanksgiving feast. This year our culture has changed…
My mom sent an email to all of us and asked a simple questions… could you make 2 more of what you are bringing to the Thanksgiving meal? It was really simple… just make more of what you are already brining.
As a family we would deliver the meal to the families at noon and then come back to my moms for our Thanksgiving feast. So, all was set in motion and on Thursday we gathered at my moms with two extra dishes of food. My dad and I got up early that morning to do what every man does best and that was to fry some turkeys. Since I had the opportunity to deliver food to some families the day before I stayed back to finish up the turkey for our family meal… so that it was nice and hot.
As the car got packed with good, the excitement became electric… there was something special about a group of people choosing to give to others during such a self-centered day. We were doing all of this together… something about serving others that makes your family come together. (If you don’t believe me… just try it).
The car was packed… and they were off. It was almost like they couldn’t get there fast enough… The future of our family was changing right in front of our eyes.
As I sat in my parents driveway watching 2 turkey fryers, God laid on my heart something that I will never forget… “this is what Thanksgiving is all about!” Families gathering to support families in need. No need for an organization to drive it, no need to volunteer at a food pantry or meal place… you can make at least one extra meal each thanksgiving and give it away. It’s really that simple. If that wasn’t enough… it teaches my family that life isn’t about us, but about serving Him. A simple experience that puts all of our Faith teachings into action.
As the future of my family begins to change, I know it’s for the better. Making Thanksgiving about giving thankfully is what surrendering to the mission of Jesus is all about.
The song “With Everything” by Joel Houston comes to my mind…
Open our hearts, To see the things
That make Your heart cry, To be the church
The You would desire. Light to be seen.
Break down our pride, And all the walls
We’ve built up inside, Our earthly crowns
And all our desires, We lay at Your feet.
So let hope rise, And darkness tremble
In Your holy light, And every eye will see
Jesus, our God, Great and mighty to be praised.
Who knows what the future holds… but I do know that people need people, and even more than that… people need surrendered people who will point them towards Jesus.
