Clear the Clutter

Clutter is a fascinating thing… To be honest my wife would call me a cluttered person… I leave things everywhere.  Recently I’ve had the house to myself for a few days (April and Paisley are in Florida), and while they are gone I can see a trail of my stuff throughout the house.  Most of the time it’s a frenzy to get things cleaned up before they get home and I am never successful.  Anyway… back to the clutter thing.  While sitting in a house full of clutter (this week only… I pick up after myself when April and Paisley are around), I find that it can distort my view of reality.  You might ask… WHAT?  Are you CRAZY..?  Just hear me out.

Clutter distorts my view of what my house really looks like.  Ok, maybe it distorts the possibility of what my house could look like.  Everything in it’s place… everything working in perfect harmony to accomplish what it was designed to do.  Yes, men, the floor was not created to be your dirty and clean laundry hamper.  As much as I hate to admit it… I do get tired of living out of piles.  Anyway.. maybe more than a reality distortion field… clutter can cloud our view of reality.  Distort may be an exaggeration… I still think there is a principle here that God is teaching me…

It’s very interesting that no matter if we are an anti-clutter person or a constant clutterer (not sure if that’s a word), we all have clutter of a different sort.

Yes, we have clutter in our emotions, mind, heart, and ambitions.  Maybe we will talk about all of these concepts separately in another series of posts.  But, for now God is showing me how I can become so cluttered in my mind, heart, emotions, and ambitions… and that clutter is just clouding my view of the Mission of Jesus and the man God wants me to be.  Even further, I bet satan wants me to live in a constant state of clutter.  Clarity allows me to create focus, and focus allows me to do things with excellence.  Clutter is the opposite of clarity.

It’s kind of like that show Clean Sweep (Not sure if it even comes on anymore)… With the power of the Holy Spririt he can clarify who we are, and the parts of us that are just clutter.  When the clutter is removed… we can see who we are with clarity.

I’ve found that more clutter leads to poor decisions, and a lack of doing things well; both personally and professionally.  In other words, the more I DO the less I DO with excellence.  I must focus on the person who lived with one passion and purpose.  In reality he’s the only one that can remove the clutter.

[45] For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 ESV)

The question is… are you ready to deal with your clutter, or are you going to let it continue to lay on the floor?  Remember… most people know your clutter already (even if you don’t see it), and they are ready to help you pick it up when you are.  I promise you will be better for it…

[16] Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.  (James 5:16 ESV)

Maybe I’m wrong… but at least the clutter has reminded me to clean out the clutter and exchange it for clarity.  Focus on the one or two things that I can do with excellence.
